Since 1985, 100 thoroughbred lobsters will compete in several heats leading to the main races that will be held at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 pm. This year the East Coast Party Band will return as the headlining band on the main stage located on Bee Lane by Hotel Aiken. “The East Coast Party Band is a real crowd- friendly band that plays a great mix of beach music and old favorites,” states Stew Maurice, one of the founders of the Lobster Races. “We make sure there is a big space in front of the stage for the people who like to dance the shag.” There will be four other stages located in and around the alley with local bands playing including Merging Traffic, Anybody’s Guess, Rider, Lowdown Brown, and Palmetto Groove. The bands will play until 11 pm. Children’s area, sponsor Atlantic Broadband and SRP, features activities and interactive rides and games. Ride bands can be purchased for $25. The Community Stage, sponsored by Carriage Hills Living Center, will feature local groups who will perform throughout the evening and between the lobster races. Many local restaurants will be on hand to provide food for festival goers as well as vendors on Newberry Street.
