The Museum of Ceramics explores the rich heritage of the area in and around East Liverpool, Ohio, celebrating its history as the Pottery Capital of the Nation. Hundreds of commercial potteries operated here starting in 1839. With the nation's largest pottery, Homer Laughlin China Co., only ten minutes away, the tri-state area continues to be the premier pottery center of the country. The museum itself is a former 1909 post office built in a classic Beaux Arts style and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Enjoy a 35-minute multimedia show before viewing more than 4,000 objects on two floors. This is a 'GEM' location according to one popular tourism group. Highlights of the collection include a large display of Lotus Ware porcelain from the 1890s, rare Craven Art Pottery, 1930’s era W.P.A. murals and artwork, dozens of paintings, and dioramas with life-size mannequin potters engaged in traditional tasks. We also have unique ceramic’s trophies, a display of 48 Victorian occupational and fraternal shaving mugs, ornate exhibition pieces, photographs, and a giant hands-on working potters wheel from the mid-1800s.
