Description:

Since 1998, under the theme "The Impact of the African Diaspora in the Americas, a festival of African folk life: a community-based cultural and educational event devoted to grassroots cultural heritage. Madison African immigrant community will sing songs, demonstrate crafts, tell stories, cook everyday and celebratory African dishes, and address issues of cultural identity, history, and heritage. Visitors join in, learn songs and dances, ask questions, eat foods, try their hands at things, and discover the historical and present-day social relevance of the African influence and the American experience. In combination with the Festival, the organizers will prepare a Guide to African Immigrant Resources, and an on-line exhibition on the Internet. Also, a Program Book featuring articles on the role of culture in community building will be published.
