Virginia Hand Callaway was a native of Pelham, Ga., where she loved to spend time in the outdoors. She became so acquainted with native plants that she was often called a "self-taught botanist." Callaway was later able to apply this knowledge as she and her husband Cason worked to restore the depleted cotton fields, today known as Callaway Gardens, with plants indigenous to west-central Georgia. Callaway Gardens includes the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center, Day Butterfly Center, Sibley Horticultural Center, Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden, Callaway Brothers Azalea Bowl, Overlook Garden, Discovery Bicycle Trail, Pioneer Log Cabin, Ida Cason Callaway Memorial Chapel, fishing, World renowned Golf Course, beach, shopping, nature trails and daily programs.
