The March 1, 2014 Mardi Gras Festival will feature a parade with decorated floats and impressive costumes. Downtown St. Marys is rich in history and tradition and this festival is a favorite for locals and tourists. This years “Out of This World” themed event showcases exciting activities that are family friendly and begins with a 7am Color Run that offers both a 5K Run and 1-Mile Walk. Other festival events continue from 9am to 5pm and include a 10am parade and over one hundred vendors offering food, art, and miscellaneous items that you can’t help but take home. The center stage will be bursting with entertainment throughout the afternoon including a performance by 2012 America’s Got Talent performer Chris McCarty. Chris is a high-energy charismatic artist with an eclectic rock/pop music style that is out of this world. The St. Marys Waterfront Park will host the 11am-2pm Great Camden County Chili Cook-Off benefit and the 1pm costumed pet-parade. Angela Wigger, Director of Tourism, stated, “The St. Marys’ Mardi Gras Festival and Parade has, once again, been selected as a Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 Event and promises to be another great day of food and fun.” When the sun goes down, an adults only celebration begins at the annual Mardi Gras Ball where a new King and Queen are chosen each year and the Rosie Kelly Community Service award winner is announced. Ball tickets are $35 per person, include dinner and entertainment by “Squirt Gun,” a popular local band. Attire is an “Out of This World” themed costume or formal wear and tickets can be purchased with cash or check at Once Upon A Bookseller or the St. Marys Welcome Center in St. Marys.
