Description:

Since 1985, The Santa Barbara Kite Festival this Sunday is dedicated to the earthquake and tsunami recovery of Santa Barbara’s sister city Toba, Japan. The festival will be held in the “Great Meadow”on the west campus of Santa Barbara City College. Officials from Santa Barbara’s sister city committee plan to attend the festival and will host an information table. Admission and parking on west campus is free. Kite flying is a very popular sport in Japan- so much so that they have an expression for kite enthusiasts- “Tako-kichi” meaning “kite crazy”. The word “tako” is the popular name for a Japanese kite- thought to be a play on the name – Tokyo where kites are very popular. The Santa Barbara Kite Festival, a fun- filled family-style event, features kites of all sizes, shapes and colors. Flyers of all abilities are welcome. Competitions include “kite fighting” and “sport flying” for skilled flyers, and more accessible categories such as “most beautiful”, “highest flying”, and “largest kites”. One of the most popular events is the kite “tail chase” for children. Prizes will be awarded in most categories. Kites will be available for purchase at the festival. April is officially Kite Month in Santa Barbara thanks to a proclamation by the city’s honorable Mayor Marty Blum and the Santa Barbara City Council in 2007. In addition, the Santa Barbara Kite Festival was recognized in 2007 for its annual contributions to community recreation and family fun. Santa Barbara’s designation of the month of April coincides with National Kite Month – a not-for profit group co-founded by the American Kite Flyers Association and the Kite Trade Association International, recognizing the month of April as national kite month .
