Many stories can be heard through the stitches of a quilt. Fabric that was taken from a soldier’s uniform or a child’s blanket or from the discards of clothes worn by the plantation’s master are pieced together to form a purposeful piece of art. The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum will end its schedule of 2009 art exhibits with a tribute to the many tales of history and creativity woven into quilts. From November 2 through December 21, it will showcase “From Quilts in the Attic to Quilts on the Wall: Exploring Textile Art by African Americans,” in its first-floor gallery space. The new traveling exhibit is comprised of 12 quilts, two each from six artists, organized by the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department and the South Carolina State Museum.
