When the weather turns cooler, then it’s time for the Rock Shrimp Festival in historic St. Marys. This festival is held the first Saturday in October and is hosted by the Kiwanis Club. The 45th Annual Rock Shrimp Festival brings a full day of family fun to St. Marys on Saturday, October 7th including 5K and 10K races and a themed 10:00 a.m. parade featuring floats, fire trucks, tractors and golf carts. You’ll find entertainment, demonstrations, arts and crafts vendors and food concessionaires. The best part of the day, for most, are the rock shrimp dinners that include rock shrimp, the southeastern delicacy that is the festivals namesake. Also, included in the dinner are boiled shrimp, fried fish, slaw and hushpuppies. The dinners are $10 in advance or $12 on festival day and are served from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Advance tickets are available at the St. Marys Welcome Center. New to the event is the Songwriter’s showcase with tunes throughout town and a concert from 5-8 p.m. The Rock Shrimp Festival is one of St. Marys’ signature events and brings a big crowd while maintaining a small town feel. If you’re planning on attending, advance registration is encouraged for the 5K and 10K Runs and is mandatory for Vendors and Parade Entries. You can also enjoy the St. Marys Railroad Days Express train rides at noon, 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. At the St. Marys Railroad Train Station, guests can build-a- scarecrow, tour the free St. Marys Railroad Museum, and view railroad inspection cars hosted by the North American Railcar Operators Association. Tickets are recommended in advance for train rides and can be purchased at stmarysrailroad.com. A reservation for the build-a-scarecrow event can be made at Once Upon A Bookseller at 912-882-7350.
