Halloween is a time for ghosts and goblins, witches and creatures, and spooky music. The Arizona Winds, one of Arizona’s most popular community bands, kicks off another exciting concert season with a program called “Music for a Darkened Theatre” featuring thrillers and chillers perfect for Halloween. The band’s October program includes excerpts from Danish composer Johnan de Meij’s “Symphony No. 1: Lord of the Rings”. The work, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1955 trilogy, was the inspiration for de Meij’s composition which premiered 13 years before the first feature film. “Lord of the Rings” is a programmatic piece painting a musical picture of the main characters and geography many have come to enjoy from the novels. Also on the program is Igor Stravinsky’s “Infernal Dance and Finale” from his ballet “The Firebird” which was used in Disney’s second adaptation of the animated film “Fantasia” in 2000; and the last two movements from Hector Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique”, a work that revolutionized the orchestral world during the Romantic period of the early 1800’s, “March to the Scaffold” and “Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath”. The program will feature several medleys of film music by composer Danny Elfman, whose collaborations with director Tim Burton have garnered Elman four Oscar nominations for his scores to “Batman”, “Tales from the Crypt”, “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, “Edward Scissorhands”, “Beetlejuice” and “Spider-man”. Other thrillers and chillers include music from Peter Jackson’s 2005 epic monster adventure “King Kong”; “A Little Mystery Music” by David Holsinger; and “The Witch and the Saint” by composer/conductor Steven Reineke, Music Director of The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall and Principal Pops Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Admission to the concert is free but patrons are encouraged to arrive early to ensure a seat.
