Mariposa’s annual Butterfly Festival ushers in three days of family fun during an event that celebrates one of the area’s most iconic natural beauties. Spanish for butterfly, Mariposa was named for the many beautiful butterflies found in the area by early explorers. Year after year visitors are amazed by the variety and amount of whimsical butterflies that inhabit the area in the springtime. The three-day Butterfly Festival takes place in downtown Mariposa and includes live butterfly releases, a parade, and art and artisan show, a butterfly hat competition, a taste of Mariposa, a Little Miss Butterfly and Captain Caterpillar costume competition, children’s activities, chalk art competition, and several stages of live entertainment. The Parade runs through downtown Mariposa on Saturday 10am along with a host of other activities for the entire family taking place throughout the weekend including additional live butterfly releases, an Art and Artisans Show, the Katerpillar Kids Youth Activities and Entertainment area, and a wide line- up of music and dancing.
