The Solano Symphony Performs Superb Symphonic Sampler: Haydn, Schumann, and Bizet The Solano Symphony, under the direction of Maestro Semyon Lohss, performs three gallant selections from the classic symphonic repertoire: symphonies by Haydn, Schumann, and Bizet. All three works are full of wit, joy, and energy, the best of the classical period’s attributes. These are expected of Haydn, whose symphonies are the definition of the classical style. Surprisingly, the works by Schumann and Bizet are in the same vein, undisturbed by romantic broodings. Maestro Lohss will conduct Haydn’s Symphony No. 96, in D major, the so-called “Miracle” Symphony, which was the first of Haydn’s works to be composed for his wildly successful tour and performances in London. Next, Robert Schumann’s Overture, Scherzo and Finale is an unexpectedly sunny and lilting work in three movements, which demonstrates the “romantic” composer’s gift at writing music with a decidedly bright and classic heart. Finally, Bizet’s Symphony No. 1 in C, written when he had just turned 17, is a youthful and energetic demonstration of his classical training and his already apparent genius. The three works were composed over the span of about 65 years, and showcase the perfection of the symphonic form that had been achieved by Haydn. Schumann’s work reinforced the appeal of the form with his delightful Scherzo and Finale, and Bizet, whom we would expect to have been inundated with the romanticism of the likes of Berlioz or Beethoven, instead produced a radiant work that Papa Haydn would have been proud of. The Solano Symphony welcomes its audience to come and enjoy these masterpieces of the vivacious human spirit set to music.
