There is Always a “First” for Everything

Some of the most wonderful events that an area can host are events taking place in the business/shopping districts. There is a movement in the country to have fun, free things to do in the “main street” downtown of a community. These things can be everything from “First Friday”, to “Dive in movie night” to “Second Tuesday Concert on the Green”. All have a hometown feel. Many of the activities tend to have an “arts” theme in that they feature gallery walks, concerts, movies; all with small groups of attendees enjoying a no hassle night of typically free entertainment.
You can stroll and shop in the local stores, eat in the local restaurants and visit the local attractions all on certain nights with special deals. Gallery walks are a wonderful way to spend an evening as well as an opportunity to see some fabulous art. If it’s movies that you like, all of the outdoor movies are usually family friendly. Although they are not first run, they aren’t 50 years old either. Unless of course it’s classic movie night! And a new trend sweeping the nation in recent years is a “food truck” night. These are catching on because they offer unique creations one might not otherwise be able to enjoy.
Many, many municipalities have something going on just about every night. I cannot express enough the importance of these evenings. The very fiber of all that holds a community together is visible in these events. I don’t mean to sound overly dramatic but the value cannot be minimized. Recent, painful budget cuts that have taken place in municipalities have put a great deal of these programs in jeopardy; in many case they have been rendered non-existent. They so need your support to continue.
I want to encourage all of you to make it a summer treat to look for these events in towns near you. Once a week do some Main Street shopping, sit back and listen to some music, visit an art gallery or museum or take in an “out” side movie. Street Fest includes 3 (sometimes 4) stages of live bands, monthly themes like Octoberfest and Margaritaville, beer wine and margaritas, festival food, (plus all of our downtown restaurants) business and product booths, and a kids area which varies each month, sometimes featuring a moonwalk, maze, rock wall, ponies, etc.

The First Friday ArtWalk is one of Northern Arizona's premier arts events. Each month, art galleries and businesses in historic Downtown Flagstaff open their doors with special art exhibitions, performances, live music, treats and much much more. It's Flagstaff monthly street party - the ArtWalk is one of those rare events that both locals and out-of-towners attend and enjoy. The ArtWalk happens every month, on (you guessed it) the first Friday, from 6-9pm. Many downtown hot spots remain open after 9pm as the ArtWalk celebrations continue.

With the help of Moonflicks, the Crystal City BID shows free outdoor movies. There is no better place to meet some friends, bring a picnic, and enjoy an evening under the stars.

Downtown Oxnard's First Thursdays Gourmet Food Trucks, the 805's first, best and only recurring food truck fiesta begins at Plaza Park. The event will feature DJ entertainment, free admission (truck food for sale), dance performances and plenty of free parking on street and in public lots.
